Answers, in order:

1) Maybe. Use the Magic wand and click inside the shape. Use Selections|Modify|Expand and pick a number, say 3 as a start. Now blur the image using one of the blur settings. Not as good as redoing the shape with anti-alias on, but can be acceptable if you hit the right combo of expansion and blur. Feather instead of Expand might work better as well. Experiment.

2) Absolutely no way. This feature didn't appear until version 6.x.

3) Probably not. Use the Image|Add borders tool to add more background color to the pic and try again. Flood fill the new area with your background image if needed.

4) Did you save it in the same format, or did you reduce colors when you saved it? (go from jpeg or psp to gif for example)? This can cause a color shift like the one you've seen.

I'm trying to get rid of jagged lines on a black ellipse on a white background (PSP4, 16 million colors).
The following questions aren't all related but I didn't wan't to go thread-crazy.

Is it possible to anti-alias shapes, after they are already drawn ?

Is there any way to make PSP4 write vector info ?

I couldn't use seamless pattern. Is there any other reason for this besides the image being too close to the window borders ?

This one is the most unrelated: I edited the image on the pixel level and saved...When I opened it again, alot of the pixels were slightly off color, like the editing had worn off. Any ideas ?

well, that was a mouth-full

One way to vectorize shapes is to trace them with the pen tool. You should be able to export the shape to illustrator or another vector program.

You can also make a selection then go to the path dialogue box and use "make work path" although this is somewhat clumsy.

After you have a path, you can use the path to make a selection then fill it with color which will be anti-aliased.
