How does everyone feel about intro screens? i am considering one for one of my sites... It would have the option to choose broadband or dial up and the broadband site would feature flash and stuff and the dialup would not.. Is it a terrible thing to do these days? I know allot of sites used to have intro screens. Thanks in advance for the Replys Laughing out loud

intro screens are like frames. Best to avoid, but if needed, need to have them properly done, coded well, and all navigation to seem like they are not even them. General Rule: FInd a way to incorporate the choice on your home page with content so you don't need it.

In your case, choosing connection, how much difference are you really seeing between the two sites? Is the difference really worth the trouble of maintaining two sites?

I think it is ecause I want to do more work with flash and video and things but i don't want dial up people to suffer. Not only that but I think that I could "target" some broadband users and get them to come to my site by providing "special" content to them...and target dialup by providing them with a no hassle quick site .... good point about incorporating it into the homepage i suppose i could do it that way

In addition to what I said there, I also think it's important to do it WELL. There's nothing worse than a poorly designed flash intro. You know the ones with the plain default fonts and text floating around. You can tell the designer picked up Flash yesterday and decided it would be cool to have an intro. :rolleyes:ETA: No offense meant, Ben Smiling I wrote that before I even saw your site. Something to consider though.

You can also create an Intro page which redirects the user depending on what connection they are using and also if its there first time to the site (if not go stright to there choice (broadband or dial up).

I dont mind if its a site i have never been to, to have a intro. But if i go to the site all the time, i think its a pain to wait or to skip, i want to be stright in...

In my opinion, intro screens should only be used if they're going to help your site in some way. If all the intro screen does is "Hello - welcome to our site. Click below to enter" or something similar then it is a waste of time because you're just adding onto the 3 click rule! I do try to stick to the 3 click rule whenever possible...but anyway...that's just my opinion on intro screens.

I am going to have a small text link in an obvious but not stupid place on the site that will say somthing to the effect of "view broadband version" .

Intro screens are useless, that is why you will only see them on "cheep websites". Sticking out tongue (Though there are some situations where it will be useful, but that is different).

Depends on the type of site. On some sites where the content/purpose of the site is multimedia of some sort, I have no problem with them. As long as there's an option to skip, of course.

Some examples I can think of offhand include sites for bands, movies, television shows, cartoons, etc.

I don't use them for several reasons. I think you should get your visitors in the main page ASAP and not onstruct them with splash pages. Most of the time they are useless

In my opinion the phase of having "flash intros" is burning out. The problem with having a flash intro (especially a useless one) is people that are returning to your site have already seen the intro before. Even if the intro is "very cool" a returning user will eventually get tired of it and want to skip the intro and go straight to the site. On any website, intros eventually become an extra step (extra click to the main site..etc).

Good luck!
