Illustrator transparency question

Ok.

I have a black box that I made in Illustrator and I want to make that box transparent so I can see whatever behind it. How do I do that in Illustrator??

Shotaker, you want to remove the fill from the black box, or move it to a lower layer. I'm not sure in Illustrator, but there should be options if you right click on the object to control fill.

Well, it's easy to make something completely transparent, but it doesn't seem to me that Illustrator 8 (which is the version I have) supports semi-transparency at all !?!?!? Weird!

The best thing I can find is at the bottom of the Pathfinder palette you'll find two boxes called "soft mix" and "hard mix" but that only lets you overlap two colours....

Just as a sidenote - I've been fiddling with some layouts in Flash lately. I'm finding it a really good tool to work with just for layout design. You can always export as a graphic and then bring it back into another program for slicing and optimizing.

I know it is possible to do.. maybe not with Illustrator 8 (which is also what I have) but with 9 or 10.

Anything pre Illustrator 9.0 does not support transparency AT ALL. If at all possible get IL 9 if you want transparency.

IL 8 and below only allow for 100% Fill and 0% fill.
