How do I chose color combinations?
Hello all.
This might be a little convoluted in explaining but it is a color question. Here goes...
I have a table with 2 rows 1 column. The top row is the title and the bottom row is menu links. Now I have used the color #FFFFFF, (0 0 153) and I would like to use an appropriate color for the bottom row.
What I would like to know is not really which color but how would I chose the color so that the hue, saturation etc. is correct. Dark blue top and light blue bottom for instance sounds nice but the light blues I have tried look wrong - too bright, too dark whatever.
Finally, the same goes for the menu text links color. How do I choose the appropriate contrasting color?
I know that the colors are numbered (named?) in a way that follows a set of rules, so I guess this is really what I need to know. What are the rules and how do you apply them.
Any help would be appreciated. This has been driving me crazy trying to work it out to look good.
Thanks
Bob

This is not the answer to your question(s), but it will give you lots of very useful information.
http://www.colormatters.com/entercolormatters.html
The 'web safe' pallette is made of 6x6x6=216 colours
000000 000033 000066 000099 0000cc 0000ff
330000 330033 and you can work out the rest.
http://www.oultwood.com/programming/color.htm will show you many foreground/background combinations.
Good Luck:)

Another thing you might want to take into mind is what colors mean around the world. This has been talked about a lot lately, and in the latest issue of Web Techniques there is a whole article about it. Check out their site (www.webtechniques.com) and see if you can find it. You might also want to search the entire web...

....What is up with this color association thing?!
I -really- don't see any association with green to money [USD.]
Nor red to blood.
Sure, they are the -colors- of these objects/things, but I am not that self-subservient [sorry if that word doesn't fit, I like it, though] to associate things.
Of course, I didn't share very well in Kindergarten, either.

I feel there is certainly some basis to color theory, as you can see when you're browsing web sites. Though I don't agree that if a site is red you won't want to buy anything from it because it makes you think of blood.
You can see when just browsing web sites that the ones with red, orange, yellow, and other brighter colors feel more fast-paced and busy, while ones with shades of blue (the preferred "corporate" color) or green make for a more "relaxed" feeling site, but still professional.
