Graphics that display differently
Has anybody seen anything as wild as this:
http://www.x42.com/koolefant/
When you connect to the URL with one browser, you'll
see one image. Switch to the other browser, you'll see a
different image.
Check out the source code... There's just one image.
Any explanations??
greetings
roland

If you use Netscape, view the image. If you use IE, drag the image to the address bar. The answer lies within.

Actually it's not trickery at all, just a quirk:
The 2 major Browsers involved resize images on-the-fly in a
different manner:
If you are resizing a 200x200 pixel image to 100x200, one
browser takes every 1st, 3rd, 5th column, etc and the other
browser takes every 2nd, 4th and 6th column,etc.
The trick is to interlace 2 images into one.
This was done by a programming buddy of mine using Perl.
The results of our efforts can be seen on:
http://members.tripod.de/Top_Gun/
which effectively suggests that the site is best viewed
in the other browser.
(did I mention that the site is in german? It doesn't matter for purposes of this discussion)

I thought you were asking, not trying to show off.
I saw it a few months ago on a Canadian blog (chrominance) but hey, show off if you want to.

I didn't realize the response was from the same person until you pointed it out, Suzanne... I would have thought that the question was an honest one, too. Please, for future reference, don't post questions in here that have the purpose of "showing off" what you've done.

Sorry if I appeared to be showing off.
The original designers of http://www.x42.com/koolefant/
didn't explain it either, and left it up to the surfer
to figure out an explanation.
When I got 'trickery' as the only reply, this lead me to believe that the case was closed in the eyes of many.
Good luck to your webmaster forums site. Apparently it is suffering from a lack of enthusiam and the numbers are declining.
If you continue to motivate newcomers like myself...
goodbye and goodluck

Cool trick!
Now the question is, how do you interlace the images?

Wow, sounds like we have a touchy one!
Seriously, had I read this question with no other replies, I too would have taken it to mean that you were asking how it was done, Roland. And I would have reacted as Suzanne did, answering the question subtlely because I believe giving a hint to finding the answer is far more informative than giving the answer out directly.
I really don't understand how you expected anyone here to think you weren't asking for an honest explanation of what was going on, since, after all, that is the point of this forum.
It's too bad that you feel you need to leave simply because we addressed your question... I personally don't believe anyone of the great TWF members can be blamed but yourself. TWF lacks participation right now not because of the community (because this is the friendliest community on the 'net!) but because of a lack of enthusiam by old administrators to continue to improve the forums.
Ironically as it may be, the numbers are doing anything but decling! If you want to call me on that, just take a look at the member count today and than again tomorrow... let me know which way it goes
Anyway, it was a short pleasure having you here. In the future, as a word of advice, make sure you explain yourself because a post like yours wouldn't be taken as one asking people to take a look at your own work, it would be taken as someone asking an honest question looking for an honest answer, and Suzanne was more than willing to help you. And if you think we are wrong for doing that, so be it...
