Flash Sizing Problem
I’m building a simple animation sequence in Flash that rotates between a few different photographs. For some reason the photos are changing size very slightly when the alpha changes. I’ve checked all of the sizes and they all match up. The sequence also looks perfectly fine in Flash when I preview it. Any ideas?

Thanks.

A couple questions for you. 1) How are you doing the alpha? I am assuming you are tweening. And to do this you have three keyframes right? Check the width on the second one (where alpha is 100%). Make sure the width matches the width on the 0 alpha. 2) Are the pictures symbols (movie clips or graphics)? I mean are they just the jpg or the gif or whatever you used tweened but not turned into a symbol? Make them a symbol then do your tweening.
The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it was.

Thanks for your help – this is really bugging me as I’ve never had this problem before. I’ve checked the width at all stages and they all match up. I’ve also tried making the graphic a symbol before making it a motion tween.
I made a simple animation with only one photo, with the same results. You can take a look at the FLA file at:

test.fla looked just fine to me. It didn't have the resizing problem the other one had. Could you post the source for the other one so I can take a look at that one?

Nether of the files show the sizing problem in Flash. However if you publish it to a SWF it’s visible in a HTML file and in the stand-alone viewer.

You're right. I played with it for about 30 minutes trying to figure out another way to do it but it is still doing the same thing. I don't really know what to tell you. I will keep playing with it and see what I can come up with. In the mean time, you might want to go to http://www.were-here.com/forums/index.php and post your question. That is a bigger Flash community. If you figure out what went wrong, please post it. I'd like to know what was going wrong myself.

Wierd problem. I think it is an optical illusion. Create another layer above the photo. Put a tiny circle with no fill around her eye. Put a tiny circle arount the small smudge at the bottom right hand corner. Then scroll at 1600% magnified. You'll see that although the pixels look like they move they really don't move, the appearent movement is a function of the light grey pixels becoming white.
I see the effect on both the .fla and the .swf so I don't think its just the .swf.
