Eliminating photo backgrounds
I'd appreciate any help on the most efficient manner in which to eliminate photo backgrounds (leaving behind only a person in most cases). I use Paint Shop Pro, but it's a pain to manoever the "lasso" and many times the edges don't come out smoothly. Are there any superior programs or manners in which to do this? Thanks!

Corel PhotoPaint has a tool called the clip mask where you can paint transparency onto a photo.
I don't know about PhotoShop, but I imagine it has something similar.

I think Photoshop 5.5 has a tool just for doing that. Yeah, there is a tutorial on Phong (www.phong.com) for working it. Photoshop 5 doesn't have the feature though...

Photoshop 5+ has a magnetic lasso which can be used for this. However it doesnt work very well if there is not much contrast between your subject and the background.
You are best of scanning your image at a high resolution, then ue the lasso to delete unwanted areas. It takes a very long time but I have found this the best way to do it.

The clip mask, with the paint on transparency, is a lot better than a lasso. You have pixel by pixel control, AND if you make an error, you change the colour of the paint (to white or black to change the transparency) and fix the errors. Excellent way to mask a photo quickly without losing your mind.

We have photoshop extensions at work and in there is photo mask and photo select. This will let you take out the background.

Thanks! Guess I'll have to find a way to get Photoshop somehow...once I do, I'll probably be back here LOL.
