download time on a 56KB connection
What is an acceptable maximum download time for a web page on a 56kbps connection? I have a 90KB jpg on a web page and the page takes 19 seconds according to a web analyser site. If I reduce the file size of the jpg it won't print out legibly.
Would 19 seconds be considered okay?

Is the user requesting this image from a smaller thumbnail? If they have requested to see it then they might not mind waiting for it to download.

If you use Adobe Photoshop, you may want to try if the "Save For Web..." feature will work for you (It's under File menu). You can tweak and optimize the file compression settings so you get the most out of your image's file size, yet legible. You may also want to save your JPG file into the GIF format. Depending on the type of image it is, you can get a really good file size with GIF. Also, sometimes those web analyzer sites and the web server may experience some bad days, in which they report high loading time.

if the 90kb image is one that the visitor is wanting to see 90kb would be acceptable, if the 90kb image was a header, logo or other main site image then no would not be acceptable as you have to consider all the other images, text, included bits etc on top of the 90kb.
I'm still on dial up so if you want a true time let me know the url and I'll test it for you.

Hey Busy. Tks for your offer however the site is still being built at this stage. The image IS something a visitor can choose to see if they want and nothing like a banner and thank you for confirming that 90kb is okay in that instance. Appreciated.
