Critique this logo design...
I've been working on coming up with a versitile logo design for a couple of months now. I am no artist and am never satisfied with what I produce, so I need some help. Please consider this logo, and give me your impressions. I intend to use this in various ways on my new site designs, so once I settle on the logo...the work will begin...lol
HELP!!
Thanks! :^)

I have moved this thread as the critique section is only for full website reviews.
It's nice but is it going to be in black & white?

Not necessarily. I'm trying to come up with a basic design so that I can incorporate it with different colors, sizes,...stuff like that.
I have a different logo on my index page right now (linked in sig)...and an even earlier version of a logo on the rest of the pages.
oh and...sorry bout posting it in the wrong section...I'm trying to do 15012860 things at once and slipped.

A couple of the folks here at work seem to like this one better.
Can someone please make up my mind?

Only 15012860 things!! lol
I still prefer the first one as it's bold and conveys warmth, even in B&W, but will be stonger with some great colouring.

No offense but it kinda looks like a bus companys logo, maybe just because it's b&w and flat, That second one looks to much like '%'
What colour/s do you plan on using, and will it be 1d or 2d ?
It seems to be wanting some depth

lol@bus logo...it is a bit stiff, huh? What's '96'?
As for colors, it will depend on the application...I plan on using it for both sites, TortillaBoy.com and TB-Designs.com. For instance, when I design a page for TB Designs, I will incorporate the logo into a button for the bottom credits. Also, for TortillaBoy.com I plan on making banners for each section of the site, each with it's own color scheme. all sorts of possibilities. Business cards too...one day. It's a logo...you know?...lol
I tried styling it a bit...

The wavy sun instead of the first stiff sun.
The first stiff sun would be less stiff if you rounded the bottoms of the triangles to match the circle, and used less thick lines you can interpret a third option from the two, so the hollow triangles have a heat shimmer effect (wave), giving the impression of heat.
Any colour you choose would be fine, but consider your audience and what you are representing -- this seems more fun and sun oriented, so blues and greens (clear, bright) with yellow-orange-red accents would seem to be appropriate, possibly too expected.

here's a couple more reworks...
I'm leaning toward the wood cut-out idea.
Your thoughts?

I have to go with #4.
I live in Texas (Cleburne) and you seem to be going with a Tex-Mex theme or a "south of the border" motif, to go with your nick and your Houston background.
The #4 version reflects on this southwest, tortilla flavor very well.

Great idea to start designing your logo in black and white - people should do this more often. Logos could always end up being used in print and all sorts of other places - often where black and white is the only option. So it's a really good idea to get used to designing logos this way, so they'll work in black and white as well as colour.
I like the direction you're going with this. Not sure about 3 vs. 4. In 3 the text does seem a little bit too heavy, but it's nice to see a contrast between the heavy text and light sun.

First, I'll say that your little dragonfly is just the COOLEST!
I'm kinda getting away from one of my original goals with this logo...I was trying to stay simple with clean lines, so I may abandon that wood cut-out style all together. It seems that by the comments I'm getting, this design is not impressing anyone. I'm going to try a couple different ideas, so we can compare. :^)
Thanks a ton for all your input.

I may work that #3 version of the sun into layout #7 and come up with a #9.
#5 Boring, clean and already done a hundred times...lol
#6 TB Inside
#7 Another sun version
#8 The comal idea (a comal is a flat iron skillet used to warm up torts.

I am always fascinated by the creative efforts of others, considering the fact that I have the artistic talent of a slug.
Besides that, when I am trying to come up with a logo for one of my sites, I beat myself up over it. Logos make your site instantly recognizable for its uniqueness and they reflect at a glance, hopefully, what your site is about. That makes them an important ambassador to the rest of your site.
I decided in my case to let a "slogan" do the talking, rather than a flashy, intuitive logo graphic design that I am not capable of creating. I leave the graphically visual aspect of my logos simple with geometric shapes.
I guess what I'm trying to say, TB, is that you are worrying yourself wayyyy to much over this logo design. You're trying new things when you've already come up with a good logo that fits well with the theme of your site. Design #4 incorporates all the atmosphere necessary to convey the feel and mood of your site. The font is right, the sun is right. Why knock yourself out when you've already knocked the ball out of the park?
You say noone seems impressed. Seems to me that you, perhaps, are the one that isn't impressed. Remember, KISS.

Maybe you're right. Maybe my struggle over this is just my way of avoiding the rest of the design "journey". Perfectionists never get anything done, huh? Thanks for the insight.

That's just it, I happen to think that you already have a perfect design for your logo. It's true that perfectionists truly never are finished because they're never quite sure if what they've produced is itself perfect. In which case you have to revert to asking yourself a couple of questions:
Is what I have done a capable representative of my message?
Does what I have created evoke the feel and mood of my site?
Ask yourself questions like this and when you have a positive result, accept it as being as close to perfect as you can get it, an epiphaniacal inspiration not withstanding, and accept it and move on.

lol...well, actually I have a tendency to fly loose and free with the language. Occasionally, someone will black-flag me on it.
C'mon now...you didn't really know the adjective form of epiphany before today, did you? If so, kudos to you! If not, let's let that be our vocabulary word for the day!

lol...no, I didn't, but epiphaniacal just sounded too good to be true...like an maniac having an epiphany...lol Although, that probably would be somewhat accurate. :^/
My WOTD was supposed to be "salutary", but I like "epiphanic" much better. :^)

I don't know, I think that designing a logo is a pretty serious project. You're presumably going to be using this little piece of art to identify yourself and your business in all types of media. Once it becomes your identity you won't be able to change it easily. I think that it's a good idea to spend considerable time and effort on a logo. Think about whether you'd be comfortable with any of these mock-ups representing you into the future. If you're not, then you'll have to keep working.

As I alluded earlier in this thread, your logo is indeed something to be taken seriously.
Perhaps I should defer to Megan. You should make every effort to insure that your logo works. I happen to think that design #4 best fits the "flavor" of your site based on my intimate familiarity with it living in Texas and the southwest United States. You must decide which design will be represent you for now and the future.
I notice, TB, that you're using this design on your subpages:
I'm sorry but, IMO, that design definately looks out of place.
Anyways, you've got an interesting site there and I hope you can reach a decision that works best for you on the logo issue!

That design was my first attempt...back when I didn't care so much about it all. Now I'm at a place where I really want something I can be proud of. Since I know this will be a pretty big undertaking (TortillaBoy.com alone has about 360 html documents), I don't want to have to do this again....that is why I'm going to do it in PHP using includes.
Anyway, I have decided to focus on #4, making it a little simpler and "tighter", but basically keep that layout. Also, color scheme...the fun part! lol

I'm not overly keen on the pinky colour, especially on the blue as it looks too washed out, but I do like the logo as a whole and the sun colour has come out well.

Yeah, I just threw those colors in, just cause I was tired of just seeing it in B&W.
I think I'm going to just settle on this as a logo. It will work.
Next week, I'm sure I will be having to resist my temptation to change it again..lol

Creativity is something that can be cultivated.
For instance the way I would start searching for a logo is of course with the words. Use a Theasaurus.
I would also consider something 3D. The logo you have designed is flat. Is that the best decision? I'm not saying yes or no just posing a question.
Are there relationships in the forms of the letters and images that you can exploit?
Will the logo work when it's very tiny? (here I would suggest reduction of the edges to simpler forms)
On color. Will the colors you choose work with the colors of other designs you produce?
Look at some logos for giant corporations.
