I am definitely no expert with illustrator, but I want to make that logo into vector format with illustrator. I can easily make ovals, but I don't know how to "cut out" a certain portion of it...

I have a feeling this is rather easy - so what's the answer?

Not too sure about Illistrator, but, most vector programs have a "punch" method. Try using that.

OK

First you need to create the base oval. Then you need to create another logo on top of it the size you want the hole to be - it often helps to set this to another colour.

Select both ovals and then go to the pathfinder palette. (On the same palette as align and distribute Wink ) If you can't see this, go to Window and select pathfinder.

Then, select the subtract tool in Pathfinder. This punches out a hole the size of the top oval into the bottom oval.

One final thing - if you're trying to edit it and you have Illustrator CS2, it has a tool called live trace which will take a bitmap and vectorise it automatically. It's much quicker than tracing. Just a thought.

Blessings,
David
