converting graphics for print media to web

Our graphics dept. creates images for print media using a Mac w/ Adobe Illustrator. I usually use a PC w/ Photoshop to upload images, but can't seem to even open the graphics files they send me for the web. I've tried opening them in everything from Adobe Pagemaker to Paint. Is it a Mac/PC conversion problem that I'm having? If so, what do I need to do? Although I have had a lot of web experience (content) I do not have a graphics background, so pls. respond as if you're dealing with a graphics novice. THANKS!

What is the file extension of the files that they are sending you?

I wish I knew what file extension because it would give me a clue. It's not part of the file name. I've tried to open in Photoshop and Pagemaker under "all files" and neither will open. You'd think that with either of the above Adobe products would open an Adobe Illustrator file, but I'm not having any luck at all. In general, do you need to do anything to convert graphics created on a Mac so that a PC can open/use it? THANKS!

Open the file with notepad, and tell us the first 10 characters.

We might be able to help you then

The extension is probably .tif though.

I tried to open it in notepad, but the file was too big. I opted to open it w/ wordpad and it failed. However, I did get some info from the file when I opened it in WORD. In addition to 142 pages of code, here is what I got: %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0
%%Creator: Adobe Illustrator(TM) 7.0

I tried to open it in PhotoShop as a TIFF, a JPEG, a PNG and all formats, to no avail. Thanks for trying to help.

Right click on the image they send you, and click on properties. This should tell you the extension. If there is no extension, it is probably a pc/mac conversion problem you're having and you'll need to ask them which file type they saved under and change the extension appropriately on your computer. For some reason I believe macs do not require you to save with the extension.

I think the EPSF stands for Encapsulated Post Script File. Try renaming the file with an .EPS file extension. Worth a try

.eps should work. You can only open this file w/ Photoshop 5.x
