Concept / software for website

Hope this is in the right section...

I am looking for ideas on how to develop this url: artsplosion.org

My original thought was for a site that promoted the arts on a local and regional basis. It would be setup as a non-profit and would be sustained by donations and ad revenue.

People could go to the site and find information on anything related to art in their town, city or state. This includes music, lessons, dance, shows, concerts, festivals, exhibits, etc. Essentially a site that promotes the arts.

Anyone know of any off-the-shelf (preferrably free) website software that could accomplish this task? Anything you would like to see in a site like this?
Any ideas on how to generate other revenue to keep it afloat?

Thanks

That sounds like a really neat idea. It could also work as a springboard for local artists - a way for them to find buyers and/or an audience for their work.

I don't know of any particular software for this sort of thing - you could look around for similar sites and see what they're using.

I think targeting local markets is an excellent idea and Google Adsense makes sense to me for added revenues.

Sounds like the site itself would be fairly standard (scripting language and database to manage the content), but getting all that content would be a huge task. You could get some type of CMS (MovableType, pMachine, Drupal, etc) to help, but I imagine you'd need to customize it a bit. I'm sure there are lots of local sites that have the content you'd need (for instance, in my area: activedayton.com), so maybe you could find a lot of sites like that and partner w/ them to share their content (via RSS maybe).
