To buy a logo or not to, that is the question
I have a new project and I set a budget of really low $XXXX to spend developing it, and marketing it. I am still trying to get it all coded out, but I have come to a little dilemma.
I am really bad at graphics/design. The design I am using is actually ok, I think. But the logo I made was hideous. It took me a few hours to make it and it still turned out crappy. I am wondering if I should keep trying, or if I should get a professional to do it. That would take a good chunk out of my budget but is a logo really worth it? (No, not one of those cheap people who do it for 20 bucks)
What do you think?
Thanks

Well, if you can afford it then, yes, by all means hire a professional (a real one) to do it for you. A logo is the face, essentially, of the company/brand so it is quite important to have a good logo to start off with.

Thank, but no. I would be looking for a well established professional to do it. That way I get the support, service, and quality I need.

If you want the project to be really successful I would consider hiring a professional. There's actually a lot that goes into logo design that many beginners don't consider (these are the people who think that if they can use Photoshop they can design logos! And yes, said Photoshop intentionally there). A good professional will help you to communicate the key points about the project in a visual way.

I'd say go with professional but be sure to check out their portfolio and get some proof of their work (doodles dont count).
I've had two so called professionals now that sucked, and one is in high paid advertising job. The first one tried using clipart and saying it was orginal ... the other just downloaded stuff but when I told them where to go they explained it was a draft only and would of drawn the real thing. Yeah right thats why they said it was final copy ...
IMO a new professional is what you want, they still care about their work and take pride in it, some long term pros have a name so think, well they can get away with rubbish. A bit like artists, you try put toast on the floor and people think you nuts, someone known does that and its an amazing art form ...

I am going to give it a few more hours. If I can't strike gold I get a professional. Do you have any recommendations, or people who have done great work you know about?

teammatt3,
I used TheLogoFactory.com for my logo. I already had the core concept of what I wanted... but I don't have the skills to make it look polished. TheLogoFactory.com gave me access to a professional designer whom I could email back and forth for revisions. He was very good, and I ended up with exactly what I wanted for just $300. They provide you with a CD when they're done that has the logo in several different formats (including scalable vector) and sizes.
Cheers,
Matt

I agree definately go with a pro, it's not just the look of the logo you have to take into consideration, you also have to determine how you want the logo to be displayed and on what media. In my experience I have found that it can be beneficial to use two companies for your logo especially if you require your logo for paper media because essensially logos for print are totally different to logos using the RGB pallette.

I called up some local design companies, and got a few bids. Most of the prices were around $500. Then I decided to give it another shot ($500 is a lot!) I spent another 2 hours dinking around in ImageReady and I came up with something I really liked (I think Megan would approve of it too.)
It surprised me so much I almost had a heart attack. Believe me, it's not as bad as you would expect from someone like me.
Edit: I might get it reviewed but I still have a lot of work to do on that project.

If this logo is important then get the best designer you can afford. Remember to make money, you have to spend money. Getting the right brand is important. A good logo designer should really impress you with his/her ideas.
I have used logoworks and they are fine for small jobs, but they aren't really 'brand aware.' They're good at the art but not at interpreting the message you want to convey.

Yeah it is important to get a good designer. That is what people are going to notice first. So it needs to look good. But I created something I really liked. The money will be better spent on marketing for me now.
