Button states in Dreamweaver

Hello...

Thank you in advance to anyone that knows Dreamweaver who replies to my questions. Unless you've worked with Dreamweaver specifically, most of this will probably make no sense to you.

I am building my site in Dreamweaver along with Fireworks as my graphics editor; these two programs are streamlined and made by Macromedia to work together.

I created my document, with buttons(links) and their states
(up state, mouse over state, down state, etc) in Fireworks: The buttons are simply the words: Home, About, Music, etc.
In the Fireworks preview screen all the button states work fine.

So, I export my entire document to Dreamweaver as I'm supposed to.
In Dreamweaver my page looks fine and the buttons are there in their up states. However, I cannot view their other states.

When I preview my page in the browser and run the mouse over the button or click on the button, it's state does not change! It's supposed to change color and become gaussian blurred when the pointer runs over it. The arrow pointer becomes the finger pointer, so it does indicate that it's over a button, but the appearance of the button's state itsself does not change!

I don't understand why not, because all of the image files of each button state are in my root folder. I can see them there listed next to my site map! I can click on them and the 'gaussian blurred, down state button image' opens automatically to edit in Fireworks, as it's supposed to. So why would Dreamweaver not acknowledge them?

How do I view all my different button states while IN Dreamweaver? (like while I'm editing my HTML?) I can't find a way to do it! And why don't they change states in the browser?

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here is my HTML snippet that refers to a button, as an example:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This was generated by Dreamweaver when I imported my document. This is the HTML that gets automatically hilighted in 'code view' when I click on the button in 'design view'.

I'm sure there are obvious things wrong with this snippet, that a webmaster would know right away. I am not talking about the actual link (#), there isn't one yet, I'm simply talking about the button states only...maybe someone can proofread it for me, if anyone knows how to fix it I would be really appreciative...but I am an amatuer and I don't know what it is. It's probably something dumb like a '"' or ')' being in the wrong spot or something. But I've tried everything and can't get it to work.

Someone please help if you can!

Thanks a lot!

Did you make the buttons "symbols"? Also, how did you slice the page in Fireworks? When you create a symbol, it is sliced by itself, no need to create slice over to of it.

Yes, it asks what kind of symbol I want and I choose button.

The link itsself works fine...my promblem is simply the fact that the button states do not change as they are supposed to when I roll the mouse over or click on the button.

I did not slice the document, the slices that do exist due to the buttons were generated by Fireworks itsself, as you said.

Can you give me a link to take a look at the .png file? If I open it in fireworks, I am sure I will be able to help you.
