backgrounds
For a background image that doesn't (or isn't intended to) tile, what is a good size? Should the image be extended with blank space on the edges or should css be used? Is it even worth it to try to prevent the tiling issue, since most people use 800x600 or something like that?
I've always found it irritating, but maybe i'm too picky. Input?

YES! You should definitely try to prevent tiling. Make your background at least 1300 pixels wide and if it extends lengthwise give it a good length to avoid tiling that way.
