10 reasons why your website sucks !

1. Poor graphic design ... I say it loud, this could be first reason your website sucks. One of my clients told me that more than 50% of his visitors remained on his website after he redesigned his 90’s website. Awesome effect.
2. Too much flash on your website - Too much flash is not good for your SEO and also slow down alot your website for most of users. It also takes some badwidth use it wisely !
3. Bad navigation - Your website must be very friendly to all the users. Make sure all your visitors could see all the sections easy without spending hours ;
4. Audio & videos which auto start - this scared me one time when I visited a website ( they add a radio link which started without my click - rock music ).
5. Site intros - I’ve never agreed with this. Why should I wait 30 second or more to get in a website I want to see. You really want a intro?
6. Excessive advertisements - My uncle is new to Internet and what he hates the most are the aggressive pop ups, banners, flash ads which sometimes takes the whole page for few seconds.
7. Browser compatibility - Check twice your website in all major browsers and apply for 1024 x 768 & 1280 x 1024 before you publish it. Browsers understand in different ways html/css code.
8. Orphan pages ( back button is missing ) - make sure your visitor could easily leave a page but remain in your website.
9. Slow loading sites - Either you use too much flash or heavy backgrounds and images , too much youtube videos or audio files auto started your website will take forever to load.
10. Outdated information - If I’ll enter a website and I see in latest news "Britney is still virgin!" and I open the tv and I found out that she has 2 kids I’ll never visit that website again.

Point 1 for me is a great one. I've realised i'm not great at photoshop and paying for a graphic often improves my site 10x over.

Interesting that you consider graphics the number one issue. Arguably one of the most successful sites on the 'Net, Jakob Nielsen's useit.com gets millions of page views, and is cited extensively. No graphics. From this I would conclude that the number one requirement is good content.

As for #6 - tell your uncle to get a pop-up blocker, and the FlashBlock add-on for Firefox.

Apart from your choice for #1, I think this is good advice. Thanks for posting.

I think the graphics question really depends on who your target audience is and what your topic is. I think there are some sites that have become popular despite poor design. Sites like ebay and useit.com were around long before good graphic design was done on the web. They became very successful and didn't need to change the design. I'd bet that if a competitor to ebay came along and was able to be succesful they'd be changing their design.

Irritating that Nielsen is blocking archive.org in his robots.txt!! Can't see how long that site has been like that. It's as long as I can remember which is at least 1999, if not earlier.

I also think that some sites have been able to get away with bad design because it is appropriate for them. Myspace is like that I think, and that dating site (something about a fish). People are attracted to the more casual, less designed look. It's got more of a hanging out in a friend's basement feel.

For many sites, though, design is important. If you're a business or an organization of any kind your design is going to be used to judge your level of professionalism. I was recently in a presentation where they talked about how "Content is king, but design trumps" (that's in the context of higher education but it applies elsehwere too). For me, the most important thing is that the design is appropriate for your site and your target audience. If your site is mostly about content then design isn't that important, but if it's about marketing or business then you do need to have something that looks good.

I'd still agree that good content is the #1 requirement Smiling

Other reasons why your site sucks

  1. using big words to cover up for lack of purpose. Do we know what we're doing here? No, but let's use lots of big marketing words and maybe people won't notice.
  2. keyword spam or anything else that's obviously only there for search engines
  3. I'm seconding the advertising, especially those in-text pop-up ads. Those have got to be the most irritating things since pop-up windows. I need a browser extension to block those.

I could go on here but I need to go back to work Wink

How can you tell when there are keywords that are only meant to attract the search engines? I don't think I'm familiar with this.

Yeah, I agree with the advertising---if they are covering the screen or content I am trying to read, I get really irritated and may even leave the site for good.

Site intros are not bad! I really want an intro for a site which is in flash! If the intro is not used I will must wait 10 - 20 sec until the site components are loading !

Agreed. Look at google. Is it fantastically designed, with flashing lights? Or even just some great graphics and layout? Well not really, it's as simple as it gets. A logo and then some basic links, plain text links too, with pretty much the original web default blue link colour.
And that is perfectly acceptable for its requirements and usage, and quite welcomed too!

And this is exacty the same thing. It depends on your site type/content etc.
If google had a flash intro, telling you how good the corporate google is and how much traffic it handles, how well its server infrastructure is managed etc, would you be pleased?
of course not, you want to se the little search field and type in it.

Everything on a website should be designed and produced based in its content and what it offers.
A music website promoting a band for example is acceptable to have a flash intro, showing their latest song or whatever, as you are "usually" taking a bit of time to browse about the band and are not really in a rush to get to something quickly. (unlike searching with google where all you want that input field and the go button)

But even then, maybe you just want to get their latest tour dates.
In which case, the flash intro loading is annoying.

## Bad grammar and poor spelling will affect your credibility. Awkward syntax will obscure your meaning.

If you are not a competent writer and comfortable with the language of the site, hire a pro to at least edit your content - it's worth the investment!

^Yeah, grammar and spelling is a must! I cannot emphasize how unprofessional it looks when a web page has rampant careless errors. If the writers don't know how to use the English language properly, what's to say they don't know ho to do many other things properly?

In fact, I would say that writing soundness is part of presentation. If it's bad, it makes the site look bad.

As for me, the first one is design, yes, then go SEO, navigation and the others as well. I don't welcome intros too.

Right spelling is a must for not even every website, but for any document published on the internet.

As for ADs - too much is really annoying - few and well-integrated is normal imo.

Seriously, I find that a clean site with less frills is more pleasant to visit. Every moving, shining effects that you apply will just look like an ADD which everybody try to side step.

The Mods here can be pretty lame. I have had violations over some really silly stuff, while others get away with stuff that should be violated.

Excessive advertisements really irritates the visitor because at one end they visit your site to find useful stuff and on the other hand pop up ads of the website make them feel bad.

If you have a Web site, and it just doesn't make you money, you know, it could, step back and look at it. Make you feel an emotional connection for this Web site from the scope of things and put yourself in the shoes of your potential customers and decide whether or not your website appeals to them. Remember that your website is just one among millions of other sites offering the same thing, and if you didn't catch the attention of customers quickly, it doesn't bring you business.

The reasons why a website design proves to be a bad design are very vast. I am going to identify just a few of them in addition to the reasons listed above and my reasons are lack of adaptability and inconsistency. If your website is not adaptable then it cannot grow and if your website contents are not consistent then its hard for the user to navigate freely.
