What do I need for SQL Server?

I want to put SQL Server 7 on my little network of machines, but what are the requirements to run it. I checked the Microsoft site and the machines all fit the spec hardware wise, but there are so many differnet versions of it like Premium, Enterprise etc... that can use differnt versions of Windows. I have one machine with Windows 98 SE and another with Windows 98. one of these shares my Internet connection to the other. Can I put SQL server directly onto this, or do I have to Windows NT acting as a server. Does anyone know or know a good resource for this?

Thanks.

I have had it running on Win 98 on a low spec machine, though it was never really tested as I upgraded to NT shortly after.

Hi,

I would put it on the best machine I had since it is the one that's going to have to handle the traffic. The faster and better the machine, the faster the results

sure, that is as always the case - but in many cases the results will be similar until you hit a certain traffic level - load test it.

Since you have Windows 98, you would need to install the Desktop Edition. This comes on the normal SQL Server 7 CD, and is an option in the autorun CD menu.
There are no real minimum hardware requirements, I have it running on a P90 with 64Mb RAM, it runs OK but its not particularly good Laughing out loud
You may want to get SQL Server 2000, I believe it has just been released. As far as I know it also runs on Win98 but requires Windows 2000 to take advantage of all features. I would imagine that its minimum requirements are also higher Smiling
Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone.
We wouldn't have any traffic hitting it, it's for developement purposes only to then upload the databases to our host. So it seems it runs on Win 98 anyway, which is the main thing to start with.

Thanks again
