SQL Server hosting costs (Australia)
Hi
I have been shopping around for hosting with SQL Server support and have found massive variations in the cost of an SQL Server db per month. Some companys will charge $600+ per year while others are almost giving it away free.
Has anyone used a host who charges very little for SQL Server? How can they offer it so cheap and what are the drawbacks? BTW I am looking into Australian hosts, want to keep it local.
Also while I am here, how do backups work on SQL Server? You have a host and you can only interact with it via asp... How do you make backups?
Thank you.
Nasanu.

I can't comment about Australian hosts, but in general, you get what you pay for. Usually, the cheaper you go the more accounts are going to be sitting on the SQL Server, which means more chances for problems (people running bad queries that kill the server).
$600 sounds a little steep for just database hosting. I currently use a fairly cheap host ($40/month for web/mail/database) and haven't had any major problems except for occasional slowness.
Your host should do daily backups for you (otherwise I would look for another host). If you want to be extra careful you could always export your data on a daily basis to another SQL Server or Access database.
