vBulletin is also vulnerable with older versions. With that said, like always, it's important to use the latest version of these types of software.

There's phpBB, Vanilla, or punBB, all free and open source. Vanilla is quite different but very modern looking.
The biggest problem with forum software is customizing the look to fit your site. Make sure whichever solution you choose is easy to modify to suit the look of your site. I've just started investigating Vanilla and Pun so I'm not sure how the templates work with them. With phpBB (and vBulletin which wer'e using here), there are tons of images that need to be customized to fit your design, and that's annoying to do. There are a lot of pre-made designs available though.
You will need to have php and mySQL available on your hosting account, and be able to set up a database on the server.

I wish to add a phBB2 forum to my website. Is there any complications to make it work on the web after uploading? I have heard that it is very difficult to make things work on the internet.

SMF is the hot free script out there right now,
My only alternative is the IPB's 1.3 final. Simple, neat and easy. It's not readily available however, if you need a copy let me know.

I myself like to use SMF and or phpBB. infact I just made a easy
install for phpBB on my hosting server. But I am sure that don't
help you any.
both of those 2 forums have installed by hand for me easier then
all the rest so I would go for those.

The biggest downside to phpBB these days is the spam and worms. You have to really keep on top of the updates to it.
