We're back! (downtime)
Wow, what a nightmare. We've been more-or-less down since 8th October, and were expecting to have to start again from a backup from that time.
It took a few days longer than expected to get us setup (it was also Thanksgiving, last weekend, up here in Canada). This is why:
A couple of days ago we were almost ready to start again with our old backup, when we heard that our hosts had sent their HD's off for data recover. They'd received them back and our stuff had been sucessfully recovered. w00t!
It was great in a way, but annoyingly we had just finished setting up the site from backups, so we were set back a couple of days.
Anyway, welcome back TWF and welcome back to its members! Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The data is recovered, now that's awesome news!
Better to be set back a couple of days than set back a couple of months. I believe the last own backup was from April 2008 or so?
Anyway: cheese and cake for everyone!

Last night we were sitting on the couch watching House and Liam just casually pulls up the control panel at the old hosting company, and casually logs in to the server to bring up our databases that were still there! He didn't even tell me, just let me look over his shoulder to see what was there. Ha ha. What a relief!

Ahh good news indeed.
Pretty good of the host as well as they were covered in their TOS to pretty much do nothing at all had they wished.

I guess that host does have some integrity after all. Have they come out and said anymore about the problem?

Well, I'm certainly happy for you two and every other member here for this bit of good news.
Let's come back stronger than ever, alright?

Yes, quite a bit. They've posted the full story of what happened, there's also a heated discussion on their forums.
It irks me that we have to leave, if their customer service were a little better we'd stay. They honestly are frickin' great in every other respect: tier 1 connection, reasonable prices, local (to us), fast servers, simplest signup and payments procedure ever, and what makes them truly different: a hosting company Web site that doesn't suck!
Hell yeah!
*** EDIT ***
Not sure if I mentioned, but we're with GPLHost now, they seem pretty good, and are very responsive to support tickets. The server is back in London, UK (Gordon Brown iz in ur servirs, taxin ur ilectronz).

Good to see that everything is back and most things are here.
I read what happened and sorry to hear about it...
I guess that things like this happen but sorry that it happened to you guys...
What do your new hosts Terms & Conditions say?
Anything that you may need to be wary of?
Many a weekly backup on a TB drive or something,
Ideas?
Best of luck,
~ Mike

Their terms and conditions are alright. They don't provide backups, so yes am reading up on RSync!
Thanks, and yes please do join in!

You will love Rsync! I just started using it. We have a client that instead of keeping their product information on the site through our usual CMS, they do a nightly export from their POS software. We use Rsync each night to grab the excel file and all the images and text description files that their system exports. Does a fantastic job where as using an ftp connection kept dieing out.
They use a windows server, so had them install Delta Copy I think it is, that puts an rsync daemon on the windows machine. This is a great program for using rsync on windows, both in server and client mode.

I use rsync for my cPanel servers as well. They run the normal backup script to a local drive, and then the backups are rsynced to another server.

Oh man, check this out. Looks like round 2 for those who decided to stick around. This time, their own home page got defaced.

I guess they have to recover from their lost clients somehow. Hopefully people have the sense to search the forums for their name first.
