Upgrade to vBulletin
We will be upgrading TWF to vBulletin next week. The upgrade is scheduled to happen Thursday and Friday.
It will take two days because TWF's IP address will change so DNS records will need to be updated to reflect the change.
I will be handling most of the upgrade because some server related things will also be taking place. We will be moving TWF to a completely new server (one of our high-end servers).
The process will be as follows:
1) Take TWF offline.
2) Transfer the entire UBB over to the new server.
3) Run a script packaged with vBulletin that will take every piece of UBB data and move it into a mySQL database.
4) Verify that everything is working properly.
5) Open TWF up with a link to the new board.
6) Change DNS records and wait for propagation to take place.
All in all, I don't expect TWF to be offline for more than an hour.
Between the move to our high-end server and the upgrade to a PHP/mySQL driven setup, you should notice some increases in speed!

This has been aborted. After wasting half of my day on trying to make this work, I have given up. The problem is that we are trying to move such a large UBB from one server to the other, and than we have to convert it. It worked well until we went to convert the posts and vB would not convert them.
At this time, I do not know what JP intends to do with the upgrade, or if he is still going to. I will not be handling it now though.

Frustrating!
I just want to clarify something though. Did you move TWF to the new server, or was the new server the problem? And I'm asuming vB was the problem, and not UBB, correct?

Absolutely nothing changed with TWF (server, etc.). It has not been moved to a new server. Further, the problem was not related to the server. vB could not find the files that it needed to perform the upgrade which was odd.

I'd contact the creators of vB first...

What was the nature of the problems, you really did not say?
Also:
What specs are the server in question?
Could you leave a link to phpinfo?
Could you list mysql variables?
Do you have php running as a module, or a cgi?
It *should* be very easy, and it sounds odd when you say that vb could not find the files to import. I would say that is very odd as well.

Werehere,
Trust me, it is *not* server related. We are running two other vB boards on the server (both very large). Asking questions related to the server are irrelevant... I have been working with them for over 5 years, trust me, I know when it is a server problem and when it is a scripting problem (I don't mean offense to anyone).
I don't think this was a vB error either, but rather a UBB error. The exact error I couldn't tell you but it wouldn't convert the posts because there were some missing files (this is what vB said). I didn't have time to go routing through things to find the missing files.

So does this lead you to believe that your UBB may be corrupt?

Not necessarily corrupt, just that I didn't get all the files moved... I opted to move the entire UBB to the new server and than do the upgrade instead of upgrading and than moving the mySQL database. If someone else has the time and wants to to do it, I would recommend going the other way around. Basically, the problem is that I just didn't have the time to find the problem. I offered to do this for JP free of charge because I only expected it to take 1 hour or less... when it cut half of my day, I had to cut my losses.

I think it might be since your version of the UBB is so old...
I am not sure though

Bob,
I have the same feeling (about corrupting the files). I am also of the same feeling about doing it the other way around (the upgrade). Don't ask me why I chose to go this way... I clearly wasn't thinking straight

Or you could just tar all the ubb files, and just replicate the structure on the new server. They dont have to be installed and working on the new server, they only have to be there.
Then it should be no problem as well.

LOL, right! It's 5am in the morning here but after those colors I am AWAKE!!!
Anyway, I just moved over the whole board to the new server and everything is running fine so far. All users are here, as well as discussions, posts and forums.
Good night (morning)
PS: Due to the movement all postings from the last 20 hours have not been moved, please repost again. Sorry for the inconvenience

This is looking good. But somehow I only have 1592 posts, when I use to have 1617. Damnit! No, it really does look sweet!

Ok, here is a list of bugs I've found...
1) All the posts are showing up twice. For example, look in a forum and you'll see two of each heading.
2) IMG code is one? Sweet! How long can we expect this to last? I've always wanted to put a picture in my signiture (like at were-here). I don't think this is a bug actually.
3) E-mail notification is always checked. Is there a way that we can turn this off, so we don't have to always un-check it?

Oh, and for some reason the edit/delete posts isn't working. I try logging in, but it never lets me.

I run this software too, so I can help some if it is not an admin thing.
1) Admin will have to fix..
2) Admin can switch this on/off in the control panel.
3) Edit your profile and change the last question about email to "no". I think that will fix it.
4) Haven't tried it here yet. Could be a user permission setting.

It seems to be working. I just find it annoying on the eyes. Once we um I guess have been on vBulletin for like 24 hours maybe we could start making complaints and what we would like to see added or gotten rid of cause I know I see many a thing already I dislike...
