the twf server.
i am looking to open a site that will hopefully retain as many people as twf does. i want to have a dedicated server for it, but i would like to know what sort of specs the twf server has so that i can base some of my specs on it, since our my server will hold (hopefully) as many people.

DoubleOK,
TWF is hosted by us - they are in fact still hosted on a shared server though and doing really good. The only bad part to that is that they have to put up with small problems that other "annoyances" (people that like to cause problems) may cause, but it doesn't happen often.
They are on a much more powerful server than you would need just because the server they are on is hosting some 250 other sites.
If you would like, contact me about your server. I have been known to give free advice on dedicated servers to people who need it.

Not to be rude, but I see no need for you to get a dedicated server. Its a waste of money, unless you ACTUALLY need one.
ICQ me for 100th time.

good point DoubleOK dot com.
hey chad, does anyone have to have any special networking skills if they decide to rent a dedicated server ? Or is it pretty much the same as to having a web space account >?

well it depends on the host of your dedicated server, hosts like communitech.net make it really easy by providing a very good control panel, most hosts have a control panel, but i really like communitech's one, check it out!!

If you get a dedicated server, either you have to run it or pay extra for the host to admin it. If you run it, you've got to pay a lot of attention to security updates and to the server itself to make sure that nothing bad is happening. On the one hand, you get a lot of control over the server. On the other hand, YOU get a lot of control over the server. For some people, it's just easiest to get a web hosting account where someone else worries about running the server.

Actually, DoubleOK, CommuniTech does *not* provide their control panel with the servers. The give you a box with Apache, Linux, and sendmail installed and you are on your own after that. Their dedicated server control panel just allows you to request IP addresses, check the status of your server, and restart it. Nothing to do with the configuration of the server. On the other hand, they also provide RaQ servers which come with control panels - but that is a RaQ thing and not a CommuniTech thing. You get that control panel with any RaQ that you purchase from any providor. A couple of hosts do provide some type of control panels for you to work with - but I don't suggest them. What if you have a security breach or something? Unless you are on some type of managed contract with them where they update your server weekly, you are going to be screwed. And then, look at their systems administrator help which is $200/hr... That will hurt you when it takes them 5 hours to find the problem, fix it, and get the server back online. Just do your research on what your host is offering and how much they are charging for what. If you don't know much about servers, look for the word "Managed" as that often means the host takes care of the server for you - it is more expensive but if you don't know anything about servers, that is what you want.
roBofh, I couldn't have said it better!
soundtank, you don't necessarily have to know much about networking as that is usually more of a physical at the NOC thing... You have to know some about DNS, IP addresses, etc. What you do have to know and understand is how to setup and maintain a server. This includes making it secure, keeping it updated constantly, adding and configuring new programs, etc. Plan on about 24 hours of non-stop work to get the system setup. Then plan on several more hours per week to keep the system up-to-date.
Running a dedicated server is by NO means as easy as getting a web account. It costs more and it usually takes more work. If you don't know how to run a server but you do want a server to yourself, look at spending more money for a Managed Server.

May I just add one thing:
It is far more efficient to have your machine managed by somebody else if you are not a pro! Spending hours and hours bugfixing, upgrading, patching and stuff is far more expensive for you then having it done by your hosting-company.
Cheers
Patrick
