this forum has over 6000 members yet i only see an average of 3/4 people online when i come on..
this is weird because i have a board with 900 members and the average online is 15.
Is there something wrong with the member count or is this some kind of vodoo curse

It is a vodoo curse.
Actually part of the problem is that a few months ago, the webmaster-forums.com domain name expired and was grabbed up by a company called UltSearch.com. So that has something to do with the site traffic.

It's always been like that though - if you look at the members list there are many, many people with 1 or 0 posts (about half of the registered members have one or fewer posts, I think). A lot of those single posters were spammers. There's also a lot of former regulars who have lost interest or moved on - it happens. Communities are dynamic places - people come and go.

Yeah i can see that people come and go but this member count 6000 with so little activity (comparing it the member scale) is just surprising.
But seeing how you had your original domain name stolen i can see why its not as lively as it should be.
Dont just sit there people, promote the boards..!
I'll put a signature link in my profile to here at WHT which should attract some people.

Well that's wonderful, thank you!
Also, keep in mind, as Megan said, that the membership count is lifetime. These forums have been around much much longer than most others. It's also a heavily international community, so while you may never see more than 3-4 on at a time, there are members online around the clock.
Additionally, these forums are very efficiently run (by the members and by the administrator(s)) and this means that the information is easily found. People spend less time trying to find things.
I personally stop by 10-15 times a day. Come in, read new messages, reply where necessary or where desired, then go elsewhere and come back later. There are always new messages, but never so many that I am overwhelmed by all the stuff I need to read and catch up on.

You also have to take into account people who sign up just to post one thing or two (usually in the promotion and marketing) and then never come back. :S

Um, yeah. Like Megan said... However, spammers post in Marketplace, not Promotions and Marketing.
