Welcome aboard kirun,
Moderators are normally chosen on experience and how they conduct themselves within the forum. If a particular section requires a new moderator then the administration team will generally approach the person they would like to offer the position to.
The criteria for the enthusiast, senior member, etc is the number of postings that person has made.
The icons under the names are avatars and once you reach 25 posts you can upload your own which must be no more than 50x50 pixels.
I hope you enjoy participating.

kirun,
Yes, Avatars are basically small icons. They are there to allow you to express yourself in some way, shape, or form as an image as words can't say it all
