The Impossible Design Challenge - our first contest!
That's right, we are holding our very first contest – hopefully the first of many. The theme for the contest is “The impossible design challenge”. Participants must design a web page or web site based on a seemingly impossible design theme. And just in time for Hallowe'en
This month's theme is the color orange. And not just any orange. We're going with the ugliest, most hideous shade(s) of orange we can possibly find. You've got two choices: #FF3300 (Red-Red-Orange) or #996600 (Dark Orange-Yellow). Your challenge is to design a web page or site using one of those colours.
Contest Process
- Entires must be recieved by 4:30 PM Eastern Standard Time on October 31, 2006. You may submit your entry by posting it in the Contest Entires thread (availalbe on or around October 27th) or by sending it directly to Megan by Private Message. Include the URL to your design and a title for it (if you don't include a title Megan will make one up for you)
- After entries are closed, Megan will choose 5-7 finalists (judging criteria below)
- The five finalists will be put into a poll for voting by the forum community at large. Names will not be posted with the submissions at this stage so you may submit anonymously if you'd like (submit to Megan by PM)
Prizes
Free advertising on the forums: One month free banner ad one year in the “filler” sponsor ad area (these are the Opera/Advertise here/Tidget.com ads that rotate in the remaining sponsor spots).
Additional prizes may be named at a later date. Please contact me if you have anything you'd like to donate. Lots of kudos will be posted if you do.
NEW! Cash prizes to be announced soon!
Judging Critera
Submissions will be judged based on the following critera
- Use of the design theme (in this case, the colour orange. The more orange you have the better you score!)
- Attractiveness and quality of design
- Level of difficulty (i.e. Do you take the easy route or do you make it more challenging?)
Extras:
4. Theme and content of page/site (you have to make it about something!)
5. Quality of HTML/CSS code
Additional judging criteria may be defined later. This is our first run at this so we will work things out as we go
Rules
- All TWF members are eligible, including moderators (Megan excluded, of course, and Jeevesbond due to potential conflict of interest with the judge )
- Maximum of two entries per person
- Your site/page may be about anything you like, as long as it is not against the general TWF content regulations.
- You may submit a single-page design, a full site, or a CMS/blog theme (implemented). It must be coded in HTML/CSS (no graphic mock-ups)
- You must use the specified shades of orange (#FF3300 (Red-Red-Orange) or #996600 (Dark Orange-Yellow)). You may not modify or adjust this colour.
- Your work must be original. It may not be based on any other work or template. Any submissions found to be derivative works will be immedately removed from consideration. Should the winning entry be found to be derivative work the prizes will be immediately revoked.
How to enter
A new thread entitled "Contest Entires" will be posted on October 27th. Contest entries will not be publicly accepted before then - just so you don't influence the other entrants. If you prefer, you can send entries to me by private message any time before the contest deadline. All entries must be recieved by October 31, 2006 at 4:30 PM Eastern Standard Time.
Any Questions??
Please post. As I mentioned above, this is our first contest so there might be some kinks to work out.

No, you can use other colours if you like. In fact, that would probably increase the level of difficulty
mawooshen - you can use as much or as little as you like, but the amount of that colour is one of the ranking factors. So the more you use the better you'll do
1fastbmw - adult sites wouldn't be allowed in the banner ads (sorry).

No, you can use other colours if you like. In fact, that would probably increase the level of difficulty And you don't have to use both of those colours, just one (although if you used both that would be a seriously high level of difficulty!)
mawooshen - you can use as much or as little as you like, but the amount of that colour is one of the ranking factors. So the more you use the better you'll do It should be the primary colour in your design.

Damn! I had to create a site using lots of orange, but they let me pick the shades and they don't match up.
Actually, considering how much I hate orange and how much orange is on the site, it came out pretty well.

I'm having difficulty in deciding if #996600 is actually clasified as orange?
Okay we could go into well there's so much red and so much green so it must be orange.
However to me it looks brown so either I am color blind or the person who picked the color is color blind.
I think we definantly need a poll to decide if this is orange or brown.
On the brown/Orange ColorScale i'm voting:
80% Brown
with a 20% tint or orange.
It must be brown.....

One looks red and one looks brown. Not too ugly either. Were you going for more of a #FF9900 color?
My URTournament.org uses this orange all over.

Yes, one of them does look a little more brown. We did discuss some "uglier" options but decided to take it a bit easy on you for the first contest. I wasn't really sure what kind of response we would get, to be honest The next one will be harder!

A little bit. It would probably fail on criteria #1 - Use of the design theme (in this case, the colour orange. The more orange you have the better you score!). And by that we mean the two colours chosen for the contest. There isn't a lot of the contest colours, it's mostly #FF9900

No, you can use other colours if you want. The other colours chosen will increase the difficulty which is one of the judging crtiera.

Where's the post to submit to? I took this chance to do two things I don't normally do...a complete CSS layout (I normally use tables and control everything with css), and it's fixed width...(I nornally do fluid).
It was a great excersie for me!

Ok I am going to have give a MAJOR apology here...
As much as I would like to do this, I don't know if I am going to have the time to do so all the way up until the 1st of the year.
I am working on finishing the mastering portion on my album that will come out soon.
I also have 2 large networking projects that I am about to begin next week. Those projects will run into the new year and take up most of my time.
I did make a layout that I like. I went with the brownish color instead of the harsh red. I attached it so that you can see that I am not really blowing smoke up your proverbial rear ends
No matter what happens here I am going to continue to complete the design. There are things I want to do to it that I think would serve it well.
Please bear in mind that I haven't made a site in about a year. I had become extremely burned out and just dropped it cold turkey.
I loved it though so that is why I am getting back into doing it.
Anyway, keep em coming they all ROCK HARD!!!
