This forum board ...
The way this forum works seems to be ideal for something we are looking to put on our not-for-profit site in a member's only area. We would like the ability for our members to interact and network in real life with one another if appropriate, but also don't want to have their personal contact details published anywhere on the site. The idea of one member being able to email another through the forum or paging them would seem the perfect solution.
Forgive my limited technical knowledge here, but I'm wondering if this forum code is available for use generally or if it can/must be purchased. And also if anyone can recommend a similar forum which could be installed on our site for free and which is not too difficult to work with, I'd be most grateful.

This forum (vBulletin) is only available at a price. There are similar free scripts out there, but (in my opinion) they are not up to par.
http://phpBB.com is one that comes to mind.
You might want to search http://hotscripts.com or http://resourceindex.com for more.

Yabb (Yet Another Bulletin Board) is free and has lots of professional features AND it's easy to install...

I highly, highly recommend vBulletin. I use it and have never turned back, vB essentially made my community, there was none prior to having vB, when I had ezboard. It is well worth it and it is the cheapest out there for what it offers.
