Asking for critique then gone into cyberspace...
In the first month of me joining TWF I have found that many people come here and post a site up for a critique then leave. Many of them don't even read the posting agreement first. Is there a way of stopping that?
Heres an idea:
You can set user groups for forums so why not set a group like "New TWF Member" for those who have 0-10/20 posts? Then hide the website critique area from those people?

For some people, posting their site for critique keeps them coming back to read more of the thread, and therefore get active here.
For others, it is not so, as you've observed.
I don't know what the ratios are, but I'd guess that it evens out both ways. In such situations, I'd lean towards the option that provides more freedom.
Besides, I can think of scenarios where keeping Critiques open is a good idea. Say Member A refers Visitor B to TWF, recommending requesting a review for Visitor B's site, would Visitor B wait around to post 10-20 times before he can ask for a review?
otoh, I can see something similar working: members have to post three replies in Critiques before they're allowed to post a new thread. But that's a different issue.

Well it doesn't have to be 0-10/20 it can be 0-3 I find it semi-annoying that people just come here for a critique of their site then leave. Sorta the same for the market place although I can sorta understand that.

We've discussed it back and forth a few times, but the nature of being human is that some people will post and stay around and others are still searching for a place to call home.

Yes, as Suzanne said it's been discussed several times in Mod Corner. VBulletin does allow you to set a forum so that the moderators have to approve every new thread - that way we could check to make sure they've posted other reviews before asking for their own. We decided against it. Sure, it's annoying when people do that, but that forum does attract a lot of new members, some of whom do stick around. I would definitely be against hiding the forum to new members.
You also have to remember that some people just don't feel comfortable critiquing other sites. Should they be denied a some helpful advice just because of that? Another issue is the double standard - people don't have to answer three other questions in any other forum before they can post their own.
Overall we found it just wasn't worth it. You will notice, however, that many of us just don't critique sites from people who don't do their three reviews (or participate elsewhere).

I run a forum for car enthusiasts and we have the exact same problem. People signup, ask for advice get the answer then never come back. I think thats just the way it is with these things. Some stay, some go. Thats life.

Perhaps we should concentrate more on removing those members who have left, currently the database is full of members who have only posted once or twice - but maybe that's a different argument...

and the people that started those threads apart from zollet only have a small number of posts themselves, i say let it be as is, if people decide to return, great, if not, its doing no harm. There is life outside the forums you know, and some people crazy as it may seem, dont spend as much time on a computer as we do
their backward if you ask me.
