writing an HTTPd in Perl...

To study up on my socket knowledge, I'm trying to write a simple HTTP daemon in Perl. However, I'm running into the problem of not being able to specific the content type of the data being returned to the browser. This might be because apache is already running, and it overrides my daemon. However, if this turns out not to be the case, is there anything people can suggest to fix this problem?
