writing to htpasswd from a form

I am very, very, very new to CGI and I need a script which will take information from a form (usename and password) and check to see if that username is already taken, if it is not, the script should then write the information from the form to the .htpasswd file, and if the name is taken, the script needs to redirect to a page of my choice.

I have no idea abouthow to do this, are there any pre-written scripts out there that do this? I have check cgi-resources and they do not have something like this. The script does not have to CGI, it could be PHP.

Do you have any ideas or info on where I can get a script like this?

I'm sure there is, in fact I remember seeing one not too long ago. I know I found it on www.cgi-resources.com so check there.

I think I saw what you were talking about, Register by Daniel, I tried going to his site, but I could not access the site, I think his host has disappeared.

If you are talking about some other script, please provide me with the name, if possible.

thanks,
