Joomla is a CMS portal (content management system) used to make sites out of the box. It's the current reiteration of the old Mambo engine... You can read more about it at http://www.joomla.org/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joomla

Joomla! is an award-winning Content Management System (CMS) that will help you build websites and other powerful online applications. Best of all, Joomla! is an open source solution that is freely available to everybody.
Joomla includes
# Blogging software
# Directory services
# Email newsletters
# Data collection and reporting tools
# Banner advertising systems
# Subscription services
# and many, many more
Tried Mambo, then Joomla, then the less popular FlatFile Mambo/Joomla named Limbo... its at limboportal.com... It's pretty cool, and easy to work with, but then came Drupal, which is about several points ahead, but I still like them all...

This looks a little like astro-turfing to me RealMetrics, are you a Joomla! fanboy or something?
Drupal is far better in my opinion. Standards compliant, very well written, less security problems.

I have also used drupal, mambo, joomla, etc., Every CMS have their own pluses and minuses.
