What do I do with a script once I download it?
OK. I realize this is an extremely stupid question, but I am utterly clueless about CGI. A client of mine wanted part of his web site to have registered users be able to post real estate listings and an option to post a picture to accompany their listings... so I downloaded a highly recommended CGI script that does everything we want.
The problem is, that I don't know what to do with it now. The tech support fellow at the hosting company walked me through customizing the CGI script so that all the folders and directories would match up. I did this in NotePad, and then saved it, which I think was actually a mistake, because now when I click on the link to the CGI on the page, it opens up a text editor.
HELP!!! Installing one teensy little script can't be THAT hard, can it? Can anyone give me plain english quick instructions on how the heck I actually get this script working on this poor man's site???
Thank you
Andrea LaRosa

Andrea,
Don't worry that it opens in a text editor, it should do that. CGI files can't be ran/opened like regular HTML files on your PC.
You said that you have all the files lined up like the readme file directed, right? Then, using your FTP program upload those scripts in exactly the locations they are to the directory that the readme file told you to make. Make sure that you upload the scripts in ASCII.
After that, you will need to "CHMOD" the files. This isn't as hard as it sounds. If you are using CuteFTP or WS_FTP look below for instructions:
CuteFTP Instructions:
1. Select the file you want to chmod.
2. Right click the file.
3. Choose "Change file permissions," or something like that.
4. Check all the boxes in the "Owner" section.
5. Check all the boxes in the "Group" section.
6. Check the "Read" and "Execute" boxes in the "Other" section.
7. Click ok.
8. A box should pop up (depending on your version) and verify that you did it right. Click ok.
9. Continue doing this to all the files that you uploaded, this is very important. You can select multiple files and CHMOD them all at once, also.
WS_FTP Instructions:
1. Select the file you want to chmod.
2. Right click the file.
3. Choose "Chmod (Unix)."
4. Check all the boxes in the "Owner" section.
5. Check all the boxes in the "Group" section.
6. Check the "Read" and "Execute" boxes in the "Other" section.
7. Click ok.
8. You should then see a bunch of stuff write to the lower part of the screen. If it says something on the line of "200 SITE CHMOD command successful" it worked.
9. Continue doing this to all the files that you uploaded, this is very important. You can select multiple files and CHMOD them all at once, also.
END INSTRUCTIONS
I hope this has helped. If I have left anything out, please comment (anyone).
Andrea, I remember how hard this was for me my first time, so if you need more help, just ask. Don't worry, some day you will be looking back at this experience with amussement.
