subdomain script... FREE
does anyone know of a free subdomain script so I can have http://whatever.javaplace.co.uk? I would quite like one for my site but my ISP which gives me my free domain doesn't seem to support them. Any help?

That wouldn't be a script that would be something to do with the server setup. I know apache allows it and I think that some NT/Win 98 servers will too.

You might want to try this: http://www.customcgi.net/truevirtual/
Good luck,

thanks, that would have been great but apparently the only requirement is that I have wild card enabled on my url which it appears I dont. The jooys of having a free domain I suppose.
Thanks anyway.

yeah, most virtual serves don't have wildcards enabled.
anyone know if say a virtual server allows 25 subdomains max if u can use a script to extend that. for example: communitech allows like 20 subdomains. if i was to use one of those subdomain script could i then have unlimited subdomains?

True, most virtual servers don't have wildcards enabled by default. However, if you contact the hosting company they should be able to add it for you for only a small setup charge if any. If you were to use a service like mydomain.com, however, and had a dedicated IP address, you could use that script to redirect actual _domain names_ to directories within your site. But yes, for subdomains wildcards must be enabled.

thx a lot adam. i figured there was a way to get unlimited subdomains even if they limited me to x number, because they have wildcards on.

Fairhousing, technically yes from my understanding, however CommuniTech says “no” when I asked. They said “It’s against our policy”. This was before I signed up with them.
However they do have wild cards enabled. CommuniTech’s sub domain feature was also inspired by Harveyopolis (according to the PCP). Who interestingly enough developed True Virtual, a cgi script that does exactly what were talking about. On his site (www.customcgi.net) he even lists CommuniTech as a compatible host (http://www.customcgi.net/truevirtual/list.shtml).
I’ve never tested it out, or do I have a need. I’m only using 8 or 9 of my 25 sub domains.
