PHP3/mySQL - This is a question for you, hosts... :)

Hello.

I am currently building my site with ASP/Access97. My site relys heavily on the database, and I have found Access to be quite slow, so I am considering switching over to a UNIX host that offers PHP3 and mySQL.

Is it worth spending more money for a UNIX host with mySQL?

How is mySQL's performance compared to Access97's?

How hard is it to learn PHP3? ?(I have seen code samples, but I've never actually tried to learn it.)

Thanks. Smiling

Stefen,
I learned PHP3 in literally three days - Granted, I had all the resources to do it at my finger tips and I didn't learn 1/3 of it but I have the basics down and I am doing some very major stuff with it (DIDS.COM v6.0 will be solely PHP3 and mySQL).

It is defintily worth spending the money for mySQL access on a UNIX host. mySQL runs WAY faster than Access could ever run! The performance for mySQL compared to Access is: faster on queries, faster on processing, faster period!

To sum this up - Make the move Wink ... How much are you talking when you say "spend more money for a UNIX host with mySQL?"

See more and more host companies are offering PHP3 and MySQL as part of their packages at no extra charge. I'm on Communitech and they offer both. You do too, don't you Chad?

Dan,

We offer PHP3 with all UNIX hosting packages at no additional charge but the mySQL is only available in our $49.95/mo. or higher package.

More and more are offering PHP3 at no charge but mySQL is still one of those options that costs because it takes maintenance work.
