Looking for Yahoo Groups type script

Sigh.. I have a hefty project to fulfill. I have to create a "Yahoo Groups" style website. I thought I could perhaps program the user database, and somehow integrate that with my two favorites Gallery and PhpBB2, but that quickly became a nightmare, and technically too much for me.

Then I thought I'd try one of the Nukes not at all knowing what the heck they really are. I went to the Php-Nukes site, and they gave you a short blurb about it what it was. Then I stumbled across the Postnuke site (is it me or is this the most confusing website on planet earth?) and couldn't find a simple "What Postnuke is or does".

So I went ahead and got Php-nukes, and had all kinds of problems even though I followed the installation perfectly. In disgust I deleted the whole thing.

I don't even know if this is what I want. Does anyone know if there is anything close to some sort of integrated package that even vaguely resembles Yahoo groups?

Thanks
Sam

Do you want the functionality of a single group? or do you want people to be able to sign up and create themselves groups on your site.

I've never seen anything the second. You could stitch together some free scripts to have an equivalent of the first, but you'd better practice your needle work before taking on that task.

PostNuke was a spin off of PHP-Nuke. And it does the same thing. Some of the modules are even interchangable between PHP-Nuke and PostNuke.

It's one single group. We're a scenic rail group that runs restored steam locomotives on weekend trips. We have a website for the general public, but the volunteers that run the thing 2,000+ of them want a place where they can discuss things, upload/view photos and files. It's basically just a private little place to "hang out". Once you're in, you're in. Everyone is at one level.

I tried installing PhP-Nuke, and had problems getting the "security code" graphic to come up, and couldn't solve it. PostNuke turned me off by the website. I'm now looking at Geeklog. Don't know much about it though.

Thanks for chiming in.

instead of a message board, what about a forum (like this) can be set up into sections or left as one main section, can be password protected, options for image posting and signatures ...

plus I think some message script systems start deleting old stuff once it gets to old or two big, where as a forum its up to you when you delete stuff

phpbb and invisionboard are free (they use PHP/MySQL)
