Ive created a small box off to the side of my main webpage. Idealy I would like to put some small bit of information in the box .. something to the effect of todays world news (like yahoo and those large webpages do)...
Does anyone know of a cgi script or java program which will automatically grab this information (for a news server or something I suppose). Thanks in advance for the replys

Hi,

you might want to check out iSyndicate.com
It would certainly be possible to make a cgi script that does what you want but it would probably to be illegal to use it, because you basically steel the information.

Actually it is legal (or so I have heard)
see: http://www.newsnow.co.uk/ for a good example.

I would also want a script like this and would be willing to barter for it if there is interest (in which case I will bring this post to the appropriate forum)

Why wouldnt it be copyright infringement?

If you want news from Reuters on your site, you have to pay cuz its their property.

Well I'm no lawyer but I expect you are just linking to there site, so it is legal.
Anybody know otherwise?

I have one little perl script that does that, and by the way, I don't think is illegal if a link goes to the news source.
My site is in Spanish so I set the script to retrieve the headline news from the yahoo / finance section in spanish. Is very fast and can be used with SSI to stick it wherever you want on your site. Also each headline has a brief story introduction.

There is another very good resource you may want to check, is at: www.newshub.com

sergiob,
Could you post a URL to a page where this script is up and running please...
Thanks,
JP

I was thinking in proposing an Spanish thread on these forums but then I thought some people may not like it, or there may not be enough people to participate... anyways it was just a thought.

If you guys want them, post a reply here and I'll send it to you.

Ok, due to popular demand Wink I have decided to make a short documentation, zip it up, and upload it.

Feel free to modify the HTML/layout but *please* keep the credit with the link back.

It's available at http://www.web-reviews.com/newsflash1b.zip

P.S: The one for CNN doesn't get the first two headlines (because the HTML is different) but there are still 8 more headlines Smiling

Man...that PHP seems very readable I think I'll pratice some.

I'll use the scripts when I get a server with PHP. The one I have now doesn't support it Sad
