Ok .htaccess is erkin' me some more .
These are the steps I took to configure my cgi script. First I used the add user interface to add a user to the passwords file. Then I copied and renamed the password file to admin for use as my adminstrative password. And everything appeared fine and dandy. The password set worked in both directories. So I used the interface to remove my admin password from the members passwords file. So in theory it was empty. Then I added a new password set. Unfortunately the password set didn't work. I tried it over and over again. Even downloaded the passwords file to inspect it. The user/pass was there but it still didn't want to work. So then out of spite I tried my adminstrative password in the members section of the website and it worked. I don't know why it worked, it wasn't in the passwords file, the one .htaccess was supposed to be reading from. So I telneted to delete the .htaccess file. Inspect it, redo it, and upload it. I did that, and still the same effect.

That is about all the light I have on my dillemma. My leads on it are either my folders permissions, the passwords file structure (ie. are the user/pass sets supposed to be on newlines? When I read the passwords file it is all on one line.), or perhaps the link I used in the .htaccess file to map the passwords file. (ie. ../cgibin/mastergate/passwords). Any ideas on what could be the problem? If this post is not in the correct forum please move it.

Thanks
VulKen

** In addition I just did some more testing. I took my .htaccess file and mapped a password file that didn't exist. Then I tried to access the folder via my browser. I was confronted by a user/pass prompt then I entered my admin password and it worked. Why? How could my admin password work when the .htaccess file was not pointing to a file that didn't even exist? **

Wow...it's really wierd that I haven't gotten any answers on this one. I usually get answers to my questions the same day. It's alright though. I'll try and battle it out with my host's tech support...that's always fun .

www.apache.org -- they should have the information you need on .htaccess...

The reason your password worked was because the password information is processed before the page is found. If the password is right, then it looks for the file/page.

hth,

Suzanne

[edit -- I think I read your post wrong -- you used your admin password in place of a set password? I'm not sure about this, but with an admin password, you can usually access all password protected areas of a site, regardless.]
