How to use cookies or another method to check whether an update message has been seen
On my default page, I've got a popup window that says what updates there have been since the last two weeks. What I'd really rather do it send them a cookie or something that I'd be able to check what update # they last saw.. say each time I changed the update window, i'd increment the number of by one, and it would pop up the window to because they hadn't seen it, but the next time they came back it would detect that they hadn't seen it, so they would not have the window pop up.
Help??
thanx

sounds like u've got it. just have the cookie write the number of the update file they've seen. then when they comeback if the number on the cookie is equal to the update number they don't get the pop. if the number is lower then they get the pop up.

Thanks for the cookie generator, but the problem is that I know ****-all about Perl, CGI, or cookies...I'm coming from a C++/Javascript background here and this is the first thing I'm attempting to do with Perl or CGI....so if someone could write that for me, the whole page...i'd appreciate that so much. Best thing I've managed to do in perl is get a little <script language="Perlscript"> thing working.
thanx guyz.

Orpheous - What, you don't know how to use PerlScript? PerlScript is an ActiveX scripting engine that allows you to use Perl with any ActiveX scripting host....geez, I would have thought you of all people would know that. I'm not stupid, I just know nothing about CGI and a small amount about Perl.....basically I know enough to be able to **** up royally so help us out ja? thnx

Ahhh...yes that does explain a whole heap. But, as I was saying, where would one begin brown-nosing if asking for a whole script to be written....? I suppose it's not really *that* big...?

Okie Dokie....since you took a fair bit of abuse, I thought I'd give you some assistance......or give you some more, depending on how you look at it
Since you know Javascript, use it to do what you need!!!! Use it to set and retrieve the cookies and call a function to pop-up a window if needed!!!
This assumes that you update your homepage w/ the updated cookie_update_id as you create your updates....
If you need assistance w/ the set and retrieval of cookies w/ Javascript, then post on that forum, or check the archives...plenty there.
If you need to check a database for available updates, look for files, etc....then you will need cgi...let me know if you do, and what it is that you are checking for the list of available updates.
