have a look at ikonboard, i'd say, it's the best one available on the net. matt (the developer) is a very dedicated man...
v2.2 will soon be available but 2.1.7 is already very cool!

I have a list of Bulletin Boards at my forums:
Here's the thread : http://www.webdevforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=94
There are also some links to hacks for the boards
Hope this helps

Why don't you check out http://phpbb.com/
The script is evolving rapidly, it might be the script for you.

It isn't dead, just no one likes it anymore.

Also I guess UBB wasn't mentioned because it's not free, and Jack wanted free boards

Although it does not have all of the features that the full version have, there is a freeware version of UBB available.

then you can download all the hacks to make it better than the not-free version.
or if you have 'connections' like I do, you got the full versoin free. I DON'T USE IT. One, because I didn't buy it. Two, it sucks! vBulletin is better.

If there is no answer on Google, then there is no question.

OK, the forum is no problem anymore. How about a free (non irc)-chatbox?

There are some other forums, also.
http://beholder.net has a free forum you install on your own server, it is Perl-based, so is optimal for UNIX servers. However, lately, they've screwed up their main page, so it has Flash. And thus, I haven't been able to get into it for the past week
http://forum.snitz.com is, in my opinion better than the paid version of UBB, even. It is great in almost every way, except it's written in ASP, and thus wont' work on the majority of UNIX servers. I like Linux servers

I seem to recall that Infopoop, in their infinite wisdom, have made it against the rules of download to hack the code. Only going on what i've read on the vB support forum though - I gave up reading the UBB forums ages ago
