Dear people in this forum/website , this site was referred by 1 of my friend on ICQ , he told me that i could find almost whatever i want as a webmaster , theres still some stuff which i still need someone who is able to help me , Can someone recommend me a book which will teach me to fullyunderstand the language of CGI & will teach me how to program/write scripts like a control panel in Communitech.Net & a book which teach you and tells your the commands/what does this means/features/operate the Unix/Linux system please ? Lastly , i've a website that had submitted to the search engines , but i just cant find my site listed whenever i use a keyword in my site. Why ?
I would HIGHLY recommend the book "Teach Yourself Perl in 21 Days". It is by Sams Publishing and can be found in most computer bookstores and I would guess Walmarts as well. (Sams publishing is owned by that corporation). I went from wondering how CGI worked to writing my own scripts from scratch with that book. Of course, a working knowledge of any computer language would be very helpful to begin with... but not absolutely necessary.
Unix/Linux... sorry, I only have dealt with them as a Webmaster and somewhat at work. I did what I had to do at work by using a manual specifically for that system.
Search Engines - Well, a complete book can be written on this (and several have) but I will hit the basics. You have to learn how to play the game to place well in Search Engines. There are millions upon millions of pages out there, all wanting to make it to the top 10 in their keywords search... but only 10 can get there. So, to do that, you learn to make your page better for the engines.
Some places I would suggest for reading up on the subject:
Site Launch - This site will help alot! Pay close attention to Big Traffic! (and Meta Tags!) http://www.sitelaunch.net/
Keyword Count - To determine your Keyword Density... Check yours and check those that come up when you search for the keywords YOU want to be listed under. Make your keyword densities closer to that number! http://www.keywordcount.com/
What I have listed will take you a bit to read... and MONTHS to master... and then they will change the algorythms and you will have to master them again. *grin* But it is well worth it.
welcome to our board, senate!
for your first steps in cgi/perl, i recommend http://www.pageresource.com/cgirec/index2.htm and the tutorial at http://cgi101.com to begin with. these sides provide a lot of useful information for beginners.
also, have a look activestate.com, you'll find a lot of book-descriptions there!
this problem with your search-engines:
check the headers again, especially the meta-tags. most search-engines don't search thru your site-content, but only the tags! did you get an answer mail from them? maybe it's just the wrong url or something like this.....

THanks guys ! But i want to know how do i write my own cgi scripts , any idea where to learn it online or i can get any good books that teach me that ?
Hi Senate,
- the book listed by Voltec should indeed help you to write your own script. For a wider choice just head over to Amazon.com and search for 'CGI', I think Amazon now has a review feature which means you can get an idea of how good books are. One you have read these books head over to some of the online resources such as http://www.resourceindex.com/ will enable you to get to grips with other scripts, which in turn will aid you in writing your own.
