can a cookie tell me this
can a cookie tell me what computer specifically is accessing my site? if so, can it only do it by reading referring to the cookie on that specific computer and it can't do it by giving the data to me, like the user name of their computer.
thanks in advance

I don't think a cookie can do anything but tell you if it exists/give you info based on its presence. It could tell you their IP, by working in conjunction with a script, since most IPs are assigned dynamically this doesn't tell you much. There are some good perl scripts at cgi-resources that have the ability to do net lookups/fingers (if the client's ISP lets you finger then you can resolve their username when they connect to your site) and even store this info to a log file.

Cookies cannot do this... That would be an invasion of ones privacy and illegal. Cookies can only store data given to them by your domain, that you put on there.
