Double OK,
I picked up PHP Essentials the other day. I have mixed feelings on recommending this book. It mainly focuses on setting up a PHP/MySQL shopping cart. For a book that is titled PHP Essentials, I thought it should focus more on PHP. It's not a bad book, in fact, it's very easy to understand. If you know any Perl, you'll breeze through PHP.
This book is mainly written for PHP 3. It has sections that go over PHP 4, because PHP 4 wasn't released yet when this book was published.
If you'd like to check it out online, go to http://thickbook.com
This is only the first book I've read on PHP so I can't really tell you any others to check out, sorry.

I would go with Core PHP Programing, it has tutorials, algorithims, and a large listing of nearly all the PHP functions. However, it is for PHP3 not PHP4 but since PHP4 is backwards compatible so it should make a difference.

I would have to agree with Randall when he suggests Core PHP, I have this book and it is very good.
I got it from amazon.co.uk but if you are based in the US, I'm not sure if the US site sells it
