The Perl Cookbook is WAY to advanced for someone just starting out.

Perl Cookbook is WAY too advanced if the person learning has NO comparable knowledge base to work from...However, I find that it helps to have a couple of good advanced texts to refer too when I am learning any new language....gives me something to chew on...
