There's not much you need for a start: a leased line with sufficient bandwidth, a name-server for your domain (there are some sites offering free name-server hosting) and the computer. Here in europe this stuff would be around $1000. a month
So you'll probably prefer to host your server with a local ISP, you give them their machine and they put it into their network. It's a lot cheaper, you can be sure there is somebody watching it 24 hours a day, you don't have to worry about bandwidth or securicy, etc. But a dedicated server is still very, very expensive.
My advice is, make some thoughts about what you really need. you said your site is growing big and you have to think about bandwidth and stuff. If you want a detailed advice about what to do, can you mail me some of your statistics? about how many hits you get, how much bandwidth you usually use and so on. And i'll be happy to give you some further opinions.
About reliability: The average downtime for our servers is one hour per year, is that enough reliable for you?

I would recomend starting out small on someones elses server, then moving up to your own server once you are bringing in enough ad revenue, unless you can get a good deal right now.
