I know, this is a newbie question. But I feel I must ask.

Does the hostname need to be a domain name (mydomain.com), or can it just be anything (WebServer1)?

If there is no answer on Google, then there is no question.

If you want to learn about anything in Linux, there are a couple of easy ways. One is to use [program name] -h or --help, to give you a listing of help. You can also try this man hostname. This will give you an online manual for the program.

Your hostname can be something quite simple like mark or it could be a domain like markhensler.com. It really just depends upon the use of the computer. Keep it simple if it is on a local network. A little more complex if on the web.
