Unethical Whois Search Sites?
OK, I have heard rumors about some sites that log whois searches and "steal" the good domains for themselves. I have seen this mentioned casually on a few different webmasters forums. Does anybody know if this actually happens?
(I always try to make sure I do my whois searches on a script on my own server because of this rumor.)

You can get domain search scripts that log all of the searches, so yep it's most likely happening.
That reason causes me to do all my searches as Net Sol, hoping that they won't spot a good name when I type it in

Net Sol = Network Solutions
The only purpose of registering a domain before someone else is to try to resell it to him or her afterwards. I don’t see how it would benefit any of the large registrars.

I've heard that happen at NSI. I never use Whois scripts on people's sites 'cause most likely the script logs the searches...

True, however someone would have to monitor these files and “grab” the good ones. I personally think it’s a waste of time and I don’t see the advantage. If someone wants good domains they’ll search and register them on their own.
