still a bit confused
Domain name registration.
I followed the links provided by this forum and read up on this subject. But I'm still confused about one thing; Why is it that when I visited the sites listed on the NIC site I found different companies charging different prices for exactly the same thing?
Here are the prices I found:
35.00
30(domainregistry.com)
25(1stDommain.net)
22(shop4domains.)
19.95(names4ever)
12.00(ghandi.net)
I am interested in registration only for just one name at this stage. Then I'm going to find webhosting seperately, hopefully for free. Will a better company do a bettter job at registering my domain name? If so, how do I find out which companies are better and what the difference is between their service and a cheaper one? Is there any reason not to go for the cheapest one?

Well basically they DO charge different amounts for the same service. Even cheaper is http://www.register-club.com I used them and they're quite good, but I also hears some bad stories about them. I registered my first domain through NetworkSolutions (about 2 years ago) $70 for two years!

Hi,
Basically there are only 3 domain registrars.
1)NETWORKSOLUTIONS
2)ICANN
3)OPENSRS
NETWORKSOLUTION:
http://www.networksolutions.com
They mainly sell domains on their own and offer affiliate programs and pay commission to sites advertising for them.
ICANN:
Uses appointed accredited registrars
http://www.icann.org/registrars/accredited-list.html
and these accredited registrars sell domains themselves or appoint their downline dealers to sell domains for them.
OPENSRS:
Recruit partners as they call them and uses these partners to sell domains for them.

INTERNIC:
The governing body for the Internet keeps all records in their database and if you want to check which domain, accredited, partner registrars that you are dealing with, just do a check on the domain registrar name at:
http://www.internic.net and
As zef mentioned, they are basically having similar service, it's just a matter of preference. I prefer ICANN and OPENSRS accredited and partner domain registrars.
The market rate today to register a domain is $13.00 average. Look for a reputable company to register your domain name and one good source is this board by reading on earlier post and recommendations by members.
Hope this helps

Go with 000domains.com. Whatever you do, stay away from Network Solutions. Not only are they expensive, but I wouldn't get near them with a ten-foot poll.
