Server on it's knees.. Load average?
At times my average load look like this:
load average: 48.16, 73.64, 99.91
and the server is hardly reachable. Does anyone know what this means?
Would adding more RAM be the solution, or a better CPU? Both?
This is from top:
5:39pm up 1:34, 2 users, load average: 18.67, 57.26, 91.55
105 processes: 102 sleeping, 3 running, 0 zombie, 0 stopped
CPU states: 48.1% user, 7.4% system, 0.0% nice, 44.4% idle
Mem: 64136K av, 49920K used, 14216K free, 62208K shrd, 2080K buff
Swap: 284520K av, 12784K used, 271736K free 24308K cached

Someone has one heck of a script!!! Looks like you need to contact whomever manages this server and have them find the individual causing the problems because a server should not have that large of a load under any circumstances (looking at the 15 minute average).
A faster (or another) CPU would be the best for getting this to a reasonable number, but even than, it is much higher than it should be.

From the looks of it it looks like the machine you're talking about only has 64MB of ram. Try getting some more... The processor doesn't really have to do with the load time.

Chad, ever heard of the UBB? I'm running a few of them on this little server..
Justin, I'm glad your noticed the 64 Mb RAM. I should in fact have 128 MB on it. I'll be on my way to scream at the tech guys now.

I was so astonished by the load averages and the CPU states that I just completely missed the RAM stats
Improving the RAM is probably your best bet... How many UBBs are you running on that machine (just for curiosity sake)?

There's 5 of them right now, with about 15 000 users.

Yikes...5 of them with 15,000 users. Your best bet would be to up the memory to 128 (or even 192 if problems persist). As Justin pointed out, a faster CPU does not mean better load times.
