Server Backup
I am in process of updating some old Redhat 5.x and 6.x servers to 7.2
My question is this. The servers both have SCSI raid arrays on them. Is there a simple way to backup all data on the existing server to allow me to restore the system if I run into any problems?
Currently, neither one has any IDE drives. I was wondering about the feasibility of hanging an ide drive on each and using it to archive the backup data. Short of that, I do have another system running RH7.2 on the same LAN with a large drive that I could store the backups onto. The question is what is the best strategy for doing this.

How much (MB) of data will you be backing up? You could use an IDE drive but a removable (tape, CD, etc.) would be better. The ideal solution to backup is keeping a copy of the backup offsite. I had a customer that would backup his system every night and he put the tape into his nightly bank deposit. That way if there was a fire/flood or other catasrophe, then he would still have the data.

I would be backing up about 6GB max. What I would like to do is to backup up one servers complete system and store it on another server. I want to be able to restore the system I am rebuilding in case of any major problems. If I just tar up the system, will tar get access to all the system files or does the system lock down key files when it is running? If I could just tar it up, I could ftp it over to another system.
