restricted ftp access
maybe u guys can tell me what i'm looking for and if it's possible.
i run a club and i have several helpers. i'd like to allow some of my helpers password protected ftp access restricted to a specific directory on my site. is this possible, if so what's it called so i can look for it in a host?
what's the security issues related with this?

Most hosts support multiple FTP accounts. That is all you really have to look for. Usually, any additional FTP accounts that you request would be directly off your main http directory (/public_html or /htdocs or something else). The user will only have access to the directory they are assigned to and nothing above it (meaning they can't get to the root user directory.
Example: You have a helper that is named Joe and you want to give him some space on your site. You can create the FTP account and unless you requested something different, your host would setup a directory (/public_html/joe or whatever) that he would be able to access. He wouldn't be able to access /public_html, but he would be able to access /public_html/joe/something/whatever/.
I hope that made sense and answered your questions..?

that last sentence confuses me. is there supposed to be a wouldn't in there instead of would?
so the host would have to set this up for me?
any security issues?
thanks in advance

I think it really depends on the host's definition of FTP accounts. I've seen some hosts offer multiple FTP accounts that just point to the main directory. However, with most hosts, it will be how Chad described. His last sentence should have read:
He would NOT be able to access /public_html, but he would be able to access /public_html/joe/something/whatever/.
