Is this possible?
Hi
I have a server set up at home running an Ubuntu LAMP server, and I want to use it to host a site. i have bought the domain name already. At cuttent it is behind my netgear router/firewall. The IP therefore is in the 192.168.0.* region. This is no good for DNS, so how can I set it up to point to my server? On my network, the IP of the server is static at 192.168.0.50. Any thoughts? I heard somewhere you would have to buy another line. is this true?
Thanks in advance
Jon

go to http://www.whatsmyip.org/ to get your outside ip address. You need to set up a port forward in your routet to port forward all traffic on port 80 to 192.168.0.50. If your Outside IP is static your set if it is dynamic you need to look into a service like http://www.no-ip.com/
to setup IIS and Email Routers.

Alright, its static . So what do I do now? Is the rest of the setup with the DNS that came with my domain name, or is there another step to take? Also, were I to move the server to another network with only a 4 port wired switch, would the IP still stay static? I assume id just have to enter a new value for my IP into my DNS records?

How did you determin that your IP adddress is static? With my connection, I usually have the same IP address for months, however, it is dynamic and can STILL change.
If you move to another connection that only has a switch, you would have to check with the ISP at thatlocation as to if they provide static or dynamic IP addresses.

Oh, so even though my IP stays the same for a few hours, doesnt mean it is static? Bugger. Well in that case how do I tell if its static? Might it be an idea to set iy up dynamically anyway, even if it turns out to be static?

Ok, almost there. When I type the site name into the address bar, it gets to my router at 192.168.0.1, but not to the server. I set up port forwarding (hopefully), but it still only gets to my router. Any thoughts? Im so so close its frustrating!
Thanks in advance,
Jon
